Setting Sail October 12, 2010
Cunard’s got a new luxury liner in development and the company simply looked to its storied past to select the perfect moniker: Queen Elizabeth. In a nod to the first QE that set sail in 1938, this new ship will combine modern cruise liner technology with the same elegant style Cunarders are accustomed to.
The ship will be a living monument to its predecessor and will feature extensive QE and QE2_artwork and memorabilia. Harkening back to the popular aft lounge on _QE2, Queen Elizabeth will have its own Yacht Club with stunning 270-degree views—the perfect spot for cocktails, conversation, and dancing.
Still with an Art Deco bent, double and triple height public rooms are back, along with wood paneling, mosaics, chandeliers, and marble accents.
Accommodations and Dining
Cunard’s new ship will feature the usual four-classes of accommodations and companion dining areas: Britannia Staterooms, Brittania Club Balcony, Queens Grill, and Princess Grill.
Main dining options will include:
- Queens and Princess Grill—First introduced on the Queen Victoria, the concept is reprised here with indoor dining as well as al fresco on a private deck terrace. Reserved for those in Queens and Princess accommodations.
- Britannia Club—Single-seating dining for guests in the premier Britannia Balcony staterooms.
- Britannia Restaurant—All other travelers dine here at the two-story Britannia Restaurant.
Public Spaces
Like all of Cunard’s liners, the public spaces onboard Queen Elizabeth are sure to impress.
Details have been released regarding:
- Queens Room—ballroom with a 1,000-square-foot dance floor, with a “royalty” theme
- Garden Lounge—supper club spot with a vaulted glass ceiling invoking the conservatory feel found at Kew Gardens
- Games Deck—offering paddle tennis, croquet, and traditional British bowls
- Midships Bar—decked out with memorabilia from the first Queen Elizabeth
